Church Growth, the Right Way I'm Scott Ball, a strategy and leadership consultant for churches like yours. I work with The Malphurs Group to equip churches to break through barriers, and maximize your impact for Christ. Download my free guide and learn 10 simple secrets that will help keep guestsfrom leaving through the back door (and even help attract higher numbers of first-timers). Yes! Send It Now I’ve been in your shoes. I know it’s hard. I know that pulling off excellence in church every single week is difficult and expensive.  Churches, especially church plants and smaller churches, don’t have enough time, budget, staff, or expertise to produce high-end stuff in-house each week. So I get it, it’s easier to take a short-cut. But sometimes our attempts to save time or money inadvertently lead us to an ethically treacherous place.  Most often, this happens within the realm of intellectual property, and so we don’t think of it as stealing.  We think of it as sharing. I’ve been where you are, walked in your shoes, and rationalized the same way. Even in creating this website–a place designed to help church leaders train up, heal up, and pump up so they can have their maximum impact–there’s a temptation to want to use great stuff on the web. But just because it can be downloaded for free doesn’t mean it’s yours to use for free. Having walked this journey, too, I think that most of us in church want to do the right thing but get confused by what’s legal and figure since it’s “all for Jesus” it doesn’t really matter. Here’s why it matters: using intellectual property without...
Big Announcement: Joining a New Team

Big Announcement: Joining a New Team

Healthy Leaders + Healthy Churches = Gospel Impact.   That’s the formula at the core of what I do as a writer, consultant, and coach. I firmly believe that when churches have a crystal clear picture of their mission, vision, values, strategies, and measures–they’re only half-way to reaching their maximum impact. The other half is developing a leadership team with healthy systems and structures. All of this only works, too, if the leadership has an abiding connection to the work of the Holy Spirit. It takes a healthy organization, and it takes healthy leaders for churches to reach their fullest potential.   In July 2015, I launched ScottBall.net with this clear statement: leadership matters. Since that time, I’ve dedicated this website to providing free resources and content that helps you and your church become healthy so you can make an impact. Thousands of you have read the articles on this site, and benefited from (what I hope is) encouraging, honest, and actionable content.   In October 2015, I took things to the next level by beginning to work hands-on with churches and leaders to help them in their unique context through consulting, coaching, and workshops. I’ve been leveraging my efforts at this singular effort: to help leaders like you and churches like yours to be healthier. In just these short months, I’ve been encouraged by your stories of God’s healing, and inspired by the work you pour into making your churches better for the Kingdom. I’m glad to say that this new phase of ministry for me in working with leaders and churches is just beginning.   As of February 2016, I’m excited...
Transform Ministry Resolutions into Results

Transform Ministry Resolutions into Results

Resolutions are annoying. Anyone can make them, and they rarely make a difference. Somewhere in the universe there’s an Interstellar-like Black Hole filled with failed New Year’s resolutions. Matthew McConaughey is knocking books off of bookshelves trying to shout at us, “These don’t work! Stop making them!” Yet year after year, jerk writers (like myself?) step onto our online platforms to proclaim: this year is different! Here’s the truth: resolutions fail because winning is too hard. Has this ever been you? I want to lose 50 pounds! (Quit when only a pound was lost in January.) I want to eat right all year! (Quit when Sonic had half-price milkshakes.) I want to write the great American novel! (Quit when the chapters got too hard to write.) I want to build my business this year! (Quit when the business wasn’t profitable in the first month.) For those of us in church, our goals are different: Higher attendance, more baptisms, better giving, increased volunteer participation, etc. We cross our fingers and hope that if we make our church services “better” these resolutions will come to pass. We set high benchmarks because culture tells us to shoot for the moon, but even if we miss we’ll land among the stars. Our reality informs us that Earth’s gravity is a lot harder to escape than a pithy poem might suggest–and so we quit. Here’s the secret: construct your goals like a staircase, not an elevator. Most resolutions lose steam by February because we want to set the goal, press a button, and shoot straight to the end. While no one thinks they’ll lose 50 pounds overnight or...
The One Web Resource Every Leader Needs

The One Web Resource Every Leader Needs

This week it’s all about the church and technology. How can the church best leverage Facebook to live out her mission? How can we use the web in unconventional ways? This week, we’ll also tackle a subject most leaders in the church never talk about. But today, I wanted to give a review of the one web resource every leader needs. A few weeks ago, a great pastor, leader, and entrepreneur named Brian Beauford approached me about kicking the tires on his start-up called Ministry Library. I had heard of the site previously, and even had encountered a handful of the resources, but was excited to learn more about it and give it an honest assessment. After all, my website is dedicated to helping leaders maximize their ministry impact, and if Ministry Library is doing a great job at working towards this mission, too, I was eager to partner with Brian and the team. After gaining access to the wide collection of content available from Ministry Library, I can confidently claim this is one web resource every leader needs. What it is Ministry Library is a subscription-based website that trains and equips leaders by connecting them with impactful content from ministry-related books. Ministry Library utilizes video summaries, printable guides, and team workshops centered around the books. These tools distill a book’s worth of content into a smaller package so that leaders can gain insight from a new book every week. One of the benefits of Ministry Library is that leaders can go as deep or shallow with a particular book as they want. For example, leaders can start by clicking on...
Big Announcement!

Big Announcement!

This, people. In case you can’t tell from the picture, my set up just came in the mail last Tuesday. Speaking of Tuesday’s… On Tuesday, November 3, I will be launching the Church Leadership Matters Podcast! This is a show where we discuss the things that matter to you because your leadership matters. Each episode of this church leadership podcast will be between 20-25 minutes and feature an interview with leaders from varying ministry backgrounds and experiences. The show will always conclude with a Leadership Lifelinewhich is a practical take away relevant to the topic that can help you and your ministry right away. The podcast will air every Tuesday at 9am and be available via iTunes (iTunes link to be posted at launch), Buzzsprout, and on the web home of the show: churchleadershipmatters.com. Best of all, you’ll never have to pull over or quit working to write down what you’re hearing in the show. Show notes will be available online, and the notes with the Leadership Lifeline can be delivered directly to your inbox so you can just enjoy listening. Finally, it’s important to me that you know who this podcast is for. It’s for you. Whether you’re the girl checking in kids on a Sunday morning or a mega church pastor, this podcast is designed to help you maximize your impact in whatever leadership capacity you serve. Don’t think that just because you aren’t on a staff that you aren’t a leader. Churches would be dead in the water without the brilliant leadership found on their volunteer teams. You can make an impact, and this podcast will help to maximize it. I hope you’re as excited as I am to learn from other great servants in the...

The power of the gospel is amplified when it is spoken aloud. Some of the most pivotal moments in my own life have come from having the Word of God spoken into my life through Spirit-filled teaching. This my heart and my endeavor when given a microphone: to point people towards the Jesus who loves them and saves them and justifies them and sets them free. Whether the venue is a leadership training or a worship service, my speaking is always centered on the power of Jesus to transform our lives and minds. Rooted in research, my messages are always content-rich so that audiences get the full benefit of hours of study compacted into one sitting. But while some are heavy on content and light on practicality, you’ll discover that my content is filtered through the lens of application. Audiences will come away with transformative direction, either in their role as a leader or within their walk with Christ. Leadership Areas of Expertise: Teamwork & Team Development Church Planting Leadership Development Second-Chair Leadership Strengths-based Leadership Strategic Planning Vision Development I am currently booking speaking engagements for weekend worship services, conferences, and retreats for churches and organizations of all sizes. Click here to contact me about booking a speaking engagement at your church service or event. Here is how some people describe my speaking: “Scott communicates the Word of God in Gospel-centered teaching, that is practical as well as life changing. Scott brings new and exciting ways to communicate the principles of the Gospel.” – David A. — “Scott is a teacher of The Word committed to delivering the Good News of Jesus Christ, with a passion for the rich depth...
